A transfer switch is not optional. It is a code requirement (NEC Article 702) that prevents your generator from backfeeding power into the utility grid. Without one, you risk electrocuting linemen working to restore power — and it is illegal.
Some people try to backfeed through a dryer outlet or bypass the system entirely. This is how people die. A proper transfer switch creates a physical disconnect that makes it impossible for generator power and utility power to be connected at the same time.

Subpanel with pre-selected circuits.
A separate subpanel installed next to your main panel with 6-10 pre-selected circuits. When the power goes out, you flip a single lever to switch those circuits to generator power. Simpler operation, but only covers the circuits wired into the subpanel.

Installed with a permanent standby generator. Senses utility power loss, starts the generator, and transfers power automatically. No human action required. The most expensive option, but the only one that works when you are not home.
